  1. What do those symbols mean on some of the barns, do you know?

  2. Yes, I do actually. We stopped a farmer and asked him. Some of the barns have QUILT SQUARES on them. They are for tourism. That's it. I was thinking it had some family symbolism... I was getting all nostalgic. Nope... purely for tourism. The farmers pay so much, someone else comes out and puts them up, and then tourist drive by and look at them. We got sucked it -- it works. LOL

These were taken on the way home from Waterloo on a small country highway. We think the barns in northern Iowa are kept up better because they have more livestock. They use them on a daily basis, probably.

My dear husband was so accommodating that day -- he even went off the beaten path a few times so I could get a closer look. Fun trip home. Ü

Does this comment mean this post is now no longer wordless? LOL

  4. I was just going to post and tell you that this post needed words! I was wondering where you got all of the pictures of barns and how long it took to collect them. I have seen/heard about the quilted barns. If I remember right, you can get a directory to do a hunt for all of them - but I could be wrong.

Hmmmmm . . . I wonder if they would let us put up a quilt square on our pole barn house? :P

I'd LOVE to do a tour like this... only not in a BUS... ugh.

Well -- I liked the barns with out the squares too... but the squares were what got us looking at the barns in the first place. Highway 20 is what we were driving on to get to Waterloo.

  7. Great photos. My mom and I always thought it would be fun to tour the country taking photos of old barns to publish in a book.
